How to housetrain outside the crate?

We have a 7 month old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. He hasn't had an accident in his crate since he was a few weeks old. He can hold it for quite a long time in his crate, probably 7-8 hours if needed, although we're almost always home to let him out before then.

The problem is, when we let him out of the crate when we're home, he'll whine to go outside every 2 hours. And if we don't let him out, he'll just find a spot to pee or poop inside the house.

Has anyone else had this problem? We know that the rule of thumb is that at 7 months old, he should be able to hold it for 7 hours, but if he's out of the crate he won't hold it. Sometimes he hardly even needs to go, but he'll still whine to be let out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!

First of all rule of thumb, I don't know where you heard that. common Sense will tell you he shouldn't have to hold it for 7 hours. right there's a red flag on why he's doing what he's doing. I don't understand why he would have to hold it for 7 hours? So that's why when he out of the crate he pee's

Also, if he is whining to go out every 2 hours, then he should be let out, if he's whineing to go out every 2 hours. I think it could be maybe he probably needs more attention. And it's a cry for attention also. I'm sorry I don't understand if you're going to have a dog why does it have to be in crt

It sounds like this is submissive or excitement urination Vetmed.ucdavis.edu &. akc.org (American kennel club) have info that might help identify the exact reason behind these occurrences and tips on resolving it.

If you want to do something other than crate when you’re home, other options might be to set up an indoor playpen or consider using the dogs leash to tether a dog to a human. Wherever the human goes, the dog goes and as soon as the human sees a signal that the dog needs to go out they take the dog outside.

Hello! I tried to crate train my little mini pit mix, but she didn't like it (super attached, got her at 2 wks), so we took her outside after every feeding and after every sleep session. When she was old enough we took her out every 2 to 3 hours and by the time she 8 months she was fully potty trained.
