Why is my dog attached to me?

My mom rescued my dog from an abusive household while I was out of state. When I came back, I met her for the first time. She was scared at first but then she attached herself to me. Now she only listens to me, will only go downstairs when I go, follows me into the bathroom and refuses to leave, will only go outside if I go, will only sleep in my room, will only come when I call, and will only run around and play with me. Why is that?

Your pup is most likely just happy to have a safe, loving home! Dogs that have dealt with abuse, in particular, tend to bond / become attached to people in a stronger sense. She probably sees you as a source of a comfort and safety, which she may have never experienced before. She also may just be particularly obedient and want to please you. Some dogs tend to become much more attached than others, but it's nothing to be too worried about unless she becomes aggressively overly-protective towards you, which is possible. See how socialization goes with her and if she is able to interact with other people and dogs without getting too protective. You may have to work on this for a while if she has lacked socialization in the past, but it's definitely possible to see changes!

If the attachment bothers you, you could try taking time apart from her and seeing how she does on her own, without you around. My dog is attached to me also and hates when I leave, so I completely understand. It can be annoying at times, but it really shows how much your dog cares for you!

Good luck!
