Unemployment benefits may be available ??

Not to get your hopes up but US pet care providers may be eligible for unemployment payments.

UNEMPLOYMENT EXPANSION Establishes a new, much more generous unemployment benefit by adding $600 per week to normal state benefits for up to four months and provides an additional 13 weeks of benefits to 39 weeks of regular unemployment insurance through the end of 2020 if they are sidelined by the outbreak. The coverage would be retroactive to Jan. 27. Extends coverage to “gig” workers and independent contractors. I also assume we will need to provide proof of income on Rover, but of course no easy way to get your income details off the platform - Rover Fail

This would be amazing! Thank you for sharing!

I’m in Florida. I was denied. Rover doesn’t pay into unemployment program, so we are not eligible.

Its all contingent on your tax filing. However on the website it is fairly easy to pull up your payment history even by the year.

I just spoke to DCs unemployment office. I was told that I can try applying now to DC, but may be rejected as DC doesn't cover gig workers but will soon. However the federal unemployment package will apply even if I continue to earn a little $. Separate on line application coming.

I'm wondering how this could work. I'm normally really busy, generally grossing $2-3 thousand per month. All of my regular clients have canceled, but I do have one little puppy coming periodically for the day. Does this minuscule amount of income bar me from claiming unemployment benefits over the coming months?

Unknown you will have to check with DC unemployment once the dust settles as none of the states know how to administer these payments just yet - stay tuned

3/27: https://apnews.com/c6836a31718b40a769b4… The package will also help replace the earnings of unemployed workers for 4 months, providing them with their state’s unemployment benefits + an extra $600 a week. For the first time, gig economy workers can claim unemployment benefits, too.

3/30 From email Rover sent https://sbecouncil.org/2020/03/30/whats… Link includes: Q&A provides a broad outline of key features of the CARES Act, including small business provisions. Highlights of this document as it relates to small businesses, entrepreneurs and the self-employed, include: Q: Unemployment Insurance – are the self-employed, gig workers, and contractors eligible? A: Yes, the bill expands unemployment benefits to cover more workers including self-employed and independent contractors, like gig workers and Uber drivers, who do not usually qualify for unemployment. Overall, the bill provides $250 billion in funding for expansion of unemployment benefits, the largest increase ever.

I live in PA and just attempted to try filing a claim for the first time and the the form, as it currently is, is impossible for me to fill out as a self employed pet sitter. I've tried calling but the number is consistently busy.

Mari, here is your page for PA's unemployment info https://www.uc.pa.gov/Pages/covid19.aspx They don't have a process yet on how gig workers should apply and say to keep checking and not to call. I think all the states are in the same situation since ICs didn't qualify before.

thanks very much, karen!
