Is bathing a dog after they have boarded expected?

Have large fenced yard and the dog boarding has lots of hair and with the amount of play is looking scraggly. Would bathing be expected?

I don’t think so. He may always have that appearance after play and you may Not know him well enough. Owner may have groomed him be4 drop off. Ask owner about bathing first, then quote an add-on price...

Expectations differ. To have satisfied customers return and refer to others, it's good to send them home in same condition they arrived. Some pups just need brushing and paw wash touch up. Unless the dog got soiled, a thorough wipe down and brush out of fur may be all that's needed.*

*With some coats, the fur absolutely must be brushed out and completely detangled before washing or else it will be a matted mess that can't be easily resolved.

My parents always wash their dog after boarding, but their dog loves to play and roll in the dirt. They kind of expect it now! I guess it depends on what the expectations of the customer are vs the cost of voarding and the services boarding kennels offer.
