Need help finding a good dog breed?

My wife and I are wanting to get a dog in the next few months (waiting to move into a house), but we don’t know what breed will be best for us. Background on us: we’ve both had dogs growing up but didn’t play a major part in training, we’re wanting to have kids in the next 2-3 years, we’re college students who work, but my job allows dogs (probably not every day but most of the time), and we’re very active. My wife is a runner who can easily run 4-5 miles per day, we both love the outdoors, hiking, camping, and I’m an avid fisherman. Here are the traits we want: medium to large, loyal, protective (enough to where I feel comfortable when my wife goes for a run), low to moderate shedding (I don’t want our home and clothes to look like we’ve been shearing sheep), likes affection because it’ll get a lot, would be good off leash when hiking or camping, would be fine leaving at home alone for 5ish hours per day. My job is flexible and would allow me to bring it to work fairly often, as well as having an hour lunch break and my wife’s job also give her an hour lunch break. We’re wanting to get some breeds in mind so we can find one at the shelter or a breeder (shelter first, breeder second). So overall, I want a medium to large dog that I know will protect my wife while on a run, be okay at home alone for a few hours per day, low shedding, and will eventually be good with kids. We have the means to socialize and have ample time to train as we’re taking a gap year from school to work.

Perhaps spend some time in some shelters or with friends dogs of different breeds to experience their various temperaments and see what suits your family best

I would recommend looking into shelters, they have great puppies fostered by families. The puppies are vaccined and neutered/spayed and cost way less then a pure breed. Plus you'll be doing such a beautiful thing. As a rescue mom I could only recommend you looking into it! My dog is my kids best friend!

I'll say German shepherd if it's well bred but go to a dog show they have different breeds or go to you local kennel club meeting they might be able to youwrite your normal schedule from when you wake up to when you go to sleep including the time your wife goes running and where as detailed as possible write exactly what you want and don't want temperament wise about what height are looking for and other descriptions you want in the dog before deciding on breed because multiple breeds possibly could be from what you said ask your boss if there is any restrictions on breeds or anything

I personally won't recommend you a pure breed of any kind, sadly pure breeds comes with a lot of issues & makes them really complicated. & there is a long story of why is bad but on the other side there are a lot of really nice mix breeds to look in to. Anything cross with a puddle is amazing for the shedding because they barely shed at all. if you mix it with an Australian sheerer also known as an Aussie Poo, or a golden retriever also know as a Goldendoodle or a Bernese (Bernie poo) you can have an spectacular active loyal dog that is not to tall & almost no shedding

Believe it or not, a Standard Poodle meets all of these requirements.

A doberman! doesn't have the long hair and they are so sweet so loyal protective but not typically aggressive (any dog can be if not socialized properly) athletic. You would love a doberman.

Although it depends on personal choice, Some people like one breed while some do not like that. In my View Ptibull is best breed. Dogs are generally very easy to take care of you can find all kinds of foods and supplies for them at your local pet store.

The reason that you should choose them as your companion because they can carry out and you can take them outside and spend time, they can also go on trips and long vacations. You can find details about Pitbull Puppies here

First and foremost you should be considering one major factor..... How much space do you have? If you live in an apartment there is little point in getting a large dog that takes up a lot of room and may also need a lot of exercising. For living areas with limited space, consider the https://www.insidedogsworld.com/dog-breeds/breed-groups/toy-dogs/ (Toy group of dogs) such as the Terrier Group or Miniature Pinscher. Also the cost of keeping your dog should be evaluated. Very large dogs may eat significant amounts of food whereas smaller dogs will eat very little in comparison. Try doing a rough calculation of cost for several different dog breeds over a twelve month period. Take into consideration food and regular visits to the vet for inoculation, https://allfactsaboutdogs.com/how-do-dogs-get-worms/ (worming) etc. You will see that larger dogs are very often much more expensive to keep.

If you have children, you may want to consider what dog breed would suit them. Children can be quite heavy handed with pets sometimes; getting a Chihuahua for example may not be such a good idea as they are delicate animals. Similarly, having a Great Dane or Saint Bernard marauding around the house could be dangerous for a child. The age and number of children you have should definitely be considered as this will affect what type of dog would best suit your circumstances.

Sounds like you have a lot of fantastic suggestions! I probably wouldn't discount any of the breeds mentioned. But I would suggest you go with the recommendation to visit a dog show - you can walk around and get great information on breeds from the breeders and most are very happy to talk with you and be honest about the breed. You can also do some research on the AKC website. I've always gotten dogs from a shelter; you can get a wonderful dog it just might not be purebred. You can also search google for "what breed of dog should I get" or similar to take an online quiz and get some possible matches. Other dogs you can consider is the Ridgeback and Vizsla - both pretty high energy but love attention. I love a bulldog or pitbull mix, boxers, and rottweilers as well. Australian Cattle Dogs or other herding dogs, if well-trained, can be a good option - you just have to watch for the herding instinct especially with young children. One thing I HIGHLY recommend is that, especially with a big dog, you socialize it with other people (adults and kids) and dogs (of all sizes). Even if you want your dog to look like a guard dog, speaking from experience, you want one that is friendly with people and dogs if you want the option to have it off leash on hikes, etc. or even if you want to have a pleasant walk or run. A dog that is fearful, aggressive, or both with other dogs or people will not be fun to walk/run and can be hard to control. Good luck finding the perfect pup!

Do your homework read about each breed. Talk to a dog trainer and go to a rescue or shelter. A training would be better than a breeder as they know more about different breeds where a breeder only knows about that breed and their own dogs which imo don't give you the whole pic.
