How can i get my two dogs to get along?

My dog a border collie likes his personal space, he is 5 years old and doesn't mind having friends, but only if they are respectful. The other dog a great Dane is 1 1/2 years old and doesn't respect boundaries and is a bit intimidating, but not aggressive just extremely playful. they did fight for a bit when I let them around each other, i had the great Dane on a leash just for more control, and since then i dont even know how to go about this, because my dog has taught other dogs boundaries before and everything was fine, but the only difference was the other dogs never really fought back. I may have cause the attack because I reacted and pulled on the leash which you aren't supposed to do, but still I really dont know how to go about this. And side note the great Dane wants to play with my dog really bad, and my dog has shown some friendly interest in the great Dane, I just dont want either one to get hurt if I just let them in an area together and I not know what to do. My first thought is to exhaust both dogs before hand but I would like to know if there's someone that has more insight into this.

This is such a great question! While it's different for all dogs, I'd like to make a few suggestions:

1) I think Daniel's suggestion of giving them their own space is a great idea! It might also be a good idea to try to introduce the dogs while one is kenneled so that you can avoid the risk of any unwanted contact, like letting the collie in the room while the great dane is kenneled or vice versa. This might help break the ice and help with the great dane's excitability. Once they don't seem overly interested in each other I would.. 2) Slowly introduce them with supervised play, but try not to limit their contact too much. If the great dane isn't aggressive and the collie is used to "correcting" unwanted behavior, they will eventually work it out. Like you said in your post, sometimes holding them back can create a more aggressive reaction. You could even try to standing between them to start out - make sure you have distractions for them too, like toys and treats! This will take the focal point off of the other dog in the room. Be prepared for a fight, but try not to be tense and trust that they won't hurt each other. Dogs can read tension and anxiety. 3) Trust that even if they don't like each other, they will eventually learn to coexist pleasantly. My dogs don't love each other, but they're both really happy dogs who do their own thing and even cuddle sometimes!

I hope this helps! One of my dogs is extremely temperamental and it's helped me to learn that there isn't a one size fits all solution for anything. Let them work it out in their own way, encourage positive interactions, and be conscious of their body language so that you can adjust how you see fit.

It is important to first ensure that each dog has their own space(e.g. kennels), where they can go to get away from the other dog. Otherwise, make sure to supervise both dogs whenever they are loose. This will mostly just take time and getting used, but having a structure in place will help both dogs get along, even if they don't like each other. Make sure you give each pet you full attention when you talk to them or pet them, and that until they are capable of fully ignoring one another, that they remain separated when you can't supervise them.

The other issue I see is you Dane is a "teenager", and will need more play time to exhaust himself. Make sure he to get his attention onto you whenever he becomes playful, so that he knows to go to you when he needs to release energy, and not to the collie.

I hope this helps you in creating balance between your furry friends!

To create a good relationship between two dogs take them along the walk. Living with each other they will create a habit to leash with each other and will get used to each other company.

Great Danes can be Great Dogs but there also very powerful.. You were wise to keep him/her on a leash... I would be sure to never leave this duo unattended one of them is bound to get hurt...One way to solve this in my opinion is to introduce a third dog into the mix a mature and sizable dog that got along with both other dogs to keep there attention off one another....
