If our trip is in 3 months and they are asking for a credit card number now, am I charged for the service now?

Credit card payment
Since you are asking about a trip 3 months from now, you will be asking a sitter to hold a spot open for you during the peak holiday time. Demand is very high during those holidays, so I really wouldn't expect any special consideration unless you are a regular customer of that particular sitter.
Yes, as soon as you click the Book It Now, your credit card will be charged. You may want to ask the sitter you selected (at or after the meet&greet) if they will hold a spot open for you and what is the latest future date they'd book it.
Rover charges your card, but holds all funds until a few days after the services are completed, and then pays the sitter/walker in case of any issues, so it really would not affect the sitter or walker.
Yes, you are charged at the moment when you and the sitter both "accept" the booking.
