Help! My dog won’t play with any toys!?

Hi, my 4 year old rescue chihuahua Elizabeth has shown absolutely zero interest in her toys. The most interaction with toys she’s had is sniffing her Nylabone, or licking peanut butter off of it. We have tried Kong toys and nothing seems to work. I understand some dogs aren’t toy-oriented but how could I teach her to love them.

                                           Thank You,
                                                               Milo

This is a "human" thing. Not all dogs want to play with toys. As long as your dog is happy, enjoys walks or being outside in the yard that is fine.

Some dogs love the "toys" most that are the free ones! Our puppy LOVES playing with empty plastic waterbottles. We watch him closely to make sure the bottles don't crack or have sharp edges. If your dog isn't interested in toys but overall seems to have a contented demeanor, maybe that's just her personality!

For many dogs as they age lose interest in toys, in fact many won't play with toys at all. I adopted several elderly dogs who never showed any interest. But if this is a sudden change you may want to have your pup checked by a vet to be sure an illness or pain isn't affecting them.

Sometimes that's just how some dogs are. Just like certain people don't like to play a certain sport. Try different kinds of toys. Maybe squeaky ones, smaller toys that can be easily lifted up by her tiny mouth. Try to slide around the toy on the floor, and see if she comes. If she is eating, drinking water and seems completely normal, then I don't see why there would be anything out of the ordinary, just that she is one of those dogs that doesn't love to play.
