Any suggestions on a sleepless dog?

I am currently boarding a dog and I was told by his owners that he was potty trained and sleeps through the night. Here I am at 6:30am and the dog has yet to fall asleep once. Every time that I try to fall asleep or even sit down, he barks at me. I have tried moving his bed into my room, have him sleep on my bed, sleep on the couch next to him... I have played soothing music, the TV, played with/and pet him, taken him on long walks, NOTHING is working. On top of that, he has had 7 accidents in my house within the last 12 hours even though I have been taking him out every 30 minutes :( I assume that he is anxious and misses his owners, but I can go without sleep every night that I am watching him. Any suggestions?

Try to do as many walks with the pup as possible. This will help him bond with you, get used to his environment, use his nose (good for anxiety), and relieve himself. Bonding with him should be your main goal right now to help alleviate some of his anxiety. I know it is hard and incredibly frustrating, but do your best. If he's eating, try feeding him from your hand (if it's safe to do so) - this will help emphasize that you are taking care of him and he is safe. It sounds like you've done this already, but try teasing him into playing with different toys - wave a tug toy around, squeeze a squeaker toy, tempt him with a ball. If he likes water, try to find a place for him to swim and bring a toy. You can also try giving him a dog massage and putting a few drops of lavender essential oil on his bedding to help him relax. You can also do some general skills training with him or put his meals in a dog food toy to help stimulate and tire his mind. Keep trying these things for as long as you can. If nothing seems to work, then ignore his behavior. It sounds cold, but sometimes we feed anxious behavior by inadvertently rewarding it. If he barks to get attention and you give him attention, then he's being encouraged to bark. See "How to Get Your Dog to Stop Barking" at www.humanesociety.org (not sure why it's messing up when I post the full link address, but Google is our friend)
Best of luck! The hardest part about boarding dogs is the fact that it is so stressful for them, and their stress becomes ours. Keep up the good work!

The first 24 hours are always the most difficult! The dog doesn't understand what has happened, why am I here in this house, where are my owners, and I'm scared. Best thing you can do is be calm with the dog, give them treats and hopefully he will grow to accept and trust you. Best of luck

I know how it feels! I hope he will get better and you'll get some sleep. I had a situation like that too, there were 2 of them and they barked 24 seven. They didn't want to be outside, they didnt want to be inside, they didnt want sleep, they didn't want to play etc. The owner said they've been boarded before with no issues, but I don't always believe everything they say. Too many dogs these days suffer from separation anxiety, they are anxious, scared, nervous, yet many people have excuses for them and do not seek professional or medical help.

You just will probably have to deal with it, I know you're suffering, but the dog is suffering too. In the worst case call Rover and ask them to find a replacement for you. You're not going to be the first one to do that. So do not feel bad. Good luck!
