Is it okay to go to work while dog is staying?

I work full time but would love to have dogs stay overnight during the week. Is that normal to leave a dog while working? Or should I just advertise for the weekend?

As long as you are up front and honest to the owner about how much time you will spend with their dog you can run your business any way you want. I take my son to preschool and swim lessons and I let the owner know there are times through out the day I will not be with their dog. Most people will be understanding.

I think it's great if you can be with the dog for most of the day. However, that's not the reality for most of these dogs anyway, so working full-time doesn't automatically disqualify you from boarding. Just know that you may not be able to make as much money if you don't spend the majority of the day with the dogs. Keep in mind that this is work, though: it's not the same as having your own dog. Others may have a different experience, but the busier I've gotten, the more work-like it's become, and I definitely feel justified in charging what I charge. In fact, I'd actually like to charge more, but I'm too chicken for that. :) Between communicating with owners, keeping up with my advertising, maintaining my calendar, and actually caring for the dogs, it can take some serious time. Don't let that scare you away either, though! You're essentially self-employed, so you have the ability to determine your work load. Good luck!

You are spot on! This is a full time job, 24 hours and 7 days a week job. Between meet and greets, drop off & pick up, sending pictures and actually caring for dogs this is a no joke real job!

I would suggest mentioning this in your profile. Also, when you first get the request, message the owner and tell them what your schedule is. Ask if this is acceptable before you go to the trouble of a meet & greet. This may save you both some time.

I work full time and all my clients are fine with that because they also work full time and their dogs are used to being crated the same time frames. I always mention my work schedule with new potential clients and only a few have decided to look for another sitter. However, I do charge slightly lower rates than those who are home most of the day because of this. I feel that's a fair exchange.

At the meet and greet, you can find out how the dog reacts to staying alone. Some dogs are used to 6-8 hours alone and are fine, some will bark and yipe at 10 minutes alone. Be up front and the owner will help you decide it it a good match.

Just put that information in your profile. I ask that dogs go in a crate when I am gone. I required the same of my own dog. Just be up front. Make sure it is clear so that there is no miscunderstanding. Some people don't mind. I always confirm before accepting any stay. Good luck!!!
