How do I train my dog to stop messing in his crate?

I've had my dog for nearly 6 years and he has been consistently difficult to potty train. He does have some separation anxiety, so he can't be left in the house unattended without being put in a crate. Even if he is in the crate for less than an hour, he pees and poops. I'm constantly having to clean out his crate and wash the bed pad that's in it. As well as bathing him multiple times a week to get him clean. My husband and I both work full time, so my dog is crated for 8 hours a day most days. I don't want to have to give him up, but my husband and I are both getting so frustrated at coming home every day to a house that stinks of dog poop. When one or both of us are home, it's not an issue. The dog will let us know when he needs to go out. I don't know how to train him to not "go" in his crate while we aren't home. HELP!

Hi Delia, For crate training, it's advised to slowly build up how long the dog is in there. This link has helpful tips. http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/...

Since you're faced with this issue after only one hour, just having a walker likely wouldn't help much. Instead, I'd suggest that you search Daycare Service on Rover. Let the potential sitter know in the messages why you have this need to help ensure that the sitter would be with your dog (and possibly other dogs) to help work through, in addition to avoiding these issues. If you let them know it would be for 5 days a week 9 hour (figuring commute) days, they may offer you a special rate.

I had the same problem with 1 of my 2 pups. I found the mistake that I made was I put him into a crate where he was able to stand and move a little too freely so he could use the restroom and lay down comfortably on the other side w/ no problem. Once I switched the crate out for one that was a bit more snug he no longer had this issue.

I hope this helps and you're able to keep your fur baby.
