It appears that the basic background check is $10. Looking at it from the pet owner's point of view, if you didn't have a background check done, they'd likely choose another sitter who had.

If the background fee is holding you back, the other option is to promote yourself though other ways, some of which are free and some are not:
Introduce yourself and services you're offering to people you know (in person, via email or community boards online classified section), and print basic or order business cards online (Vistaprint is a cost effective source) you can hand out and distribute to pet owners in person and pet friendly places...

I received a message “You passed your background check!” and I did it through the Rover app. I did not see anything that says I will be charged for it.

They didn’t use to charge. They charge $25-$35 for it now 🙄 so dumb!

You're an independent contractor not an employee, so there's no reason for Rover to cover your background check fee. If you can't afford it yourself I would ask someone to pay it for then pay them back. I was in your shoes when I started and had to save up for the background fee, so I do understand.

It doesn't sound like you understand though. $35 is an unreasonable amount to charge for a background check given the much cheaper options for similar if not identical background checks to Rover's. If I'm applying to be dog walker you can bet I have very little money currently. Every dollar counts.

Doesnt Rover GO offer free background check? I thought it did, but I may be wrong. If it does offer free background check indeed, that would be your only option.

We are sub contractors going into strangers homes.. I personally wouldn't trust anyone with my pets and my home without one. It's good business.

Of course that’s kinda common sense but the point that we are frustrated is it’s $25-$35 for a background check which is completely ridiculous. Background checks should be free especially if your unemployed. I said screw it once I found out there was no free background check

I agree Sabrina C.! I fully get the Independent Contractor part and Rover being under no obligation to pay for the background check fee but let's be honest, dog sitting/walking isn't on everyone's dream job list. Most applicants are animal lovers who can't find work elsewhere + are curre
