How do I stop my dog from whining all day?

I have a dog that's almost 2 years old and we adopted him from the shelter about 6 months ago and all he does is whine. I took him to the vet and the vet said he is a strong happy, healthy pup, but no matter what he is always whining at home. Took his for a mile run, came home and instantly started whining in between him trying to catch his breath. Tried ignoring him... he paces and get's louder and louder until I have to put him away in him room (a gate on the other side of the kitchen) just to get a break. tried treat training and that just turned into him walking off whining in the middle of training because i wasn't constantly giving him the food. He will even decide to give up on pacing and just lay in the middle of the floor and continue to whine.

Perhaps the dog misses being around all the other dogs - even in a shelter. I know years ago folks talked about using hot water bottles (those red rubber ones) and putting one of those in the crate with the dog - to hep the transition from a litter of puppies (and playmates) to being with humans.

haha I'm sorry but your dog makes me laugh. I have a little Chihuahua and he does the same thing. He generally does it when he wants attention or wants food. Maybe your dog is trying to communicate something too.

Wow sorry to hear your pup is having issues. My first thought was to take him to the vet but you said you already did. You may want to seek out an animal behaviorist to see if they can shed some light or help resolve the issue. Best of luck

Dr. Ian Dunbar has some terrific free animal behavior classes available on the internet. He teaches about "jazz up" and "settle down" commands to teach your dog. I've used the sheep herding "That'll do" command with my dogs. I then will sit/lay down and meditate to reinforce this is "quiet time".

I myself had a similar situation. I basically fostered a 1yr old Sheppard lab mix. Constantly paced and whined as if no one was home with him or sitting right next to him. Tried many things, thunder shirt, leaving the TV on low and leaving for about 15-20 mins and coming right back to give the idea we would be back. I even tried some YouTube videos by searching for relaxation music for dogs. These videos for the most part actually helped. From the trial and errors our situation was a young dog with separation anxiety. Maybe some of these ideas you can try, they may help.
