My dog limps after getting up from laying down? Help?

Hello all...My nearly 8yo terrier mix Lilly has been limping for several steps, every time she gets up from laying down. The limp/lameness in her right hind leg goes away after she walks around for a little bit. Checked her paws and there's nothing stuck. Her toenails looks fine too. She bunny hops when she runs but that's been the case since we rescued her at 2yo. This has been ongoing for about 2 weeks. No strenuous activity prior to noticing the limp. Took her to the vet 2 days ago. Vet examined her and said her kneecaps are where it should be and he did not see anything obvious. Sent me home with anti inflammatory meds and pain reliever. This is only her second day on meds...still limps after getting up from her rest. Has anyone here experienced these symptoms with your babies? If so, what was the diagnosis? I'm guessing it's arthritis for Lilly. Will probably need to bring her back for xrays after finishing off the meds and her limp doesn't improve. It pains me every time I see her limp. She doesn't seem to be in pain but I know they are master's at masking their pain. Thanks in advance for any input!

Hi there. My 6 year old Mini Schnauzer has the exact same problem as your Lilly. As per the suggestion of our breeder and longtime friend, we started giving him Recovery SA. It's only been the 2nd day so no changes yet but I've heard great things about this supplement.

my dog, same age, same problem, same leg. I am waiting for vet to call back. She walks (and runs) fine after she walks around for a bit after a nap. Probably arthritis

Hi,my border collie will be 9 in March. He just started limping after he's lying down for awhile. It's his right hind leg. He'll hop around a bit & then be fine. He & my pit bull/boxer mix will run around the yard together just fine. He doesn't seem to have a problem then. Haven't been to vet yet.

I applaud you for taking your little Lilly to the vet! The good thing is that it was nothing too serious that the vet noted when you took her in a couple of days ago, the bad news is that she is still limping. I know how heart breaking that can be on you, you just want her to feel better. (If only they could talk) I am with you and would lean towards arthritis. Especially with her being 8 years old (they are seniors at 7 years). Do you have her on any Glucosamine medication? If not I would recommend starting her up on some Glucosamine. (If you vet didn't already recommend any, I would ask him/her about "Dasquin" or "Cosquin" (two popular glucosamine medications. ) Glucosamine has some natural anti-inflammatory properties and helps condition the joins. For the first 4-6 weeks you normally start off with giving her one tablet a day than dropping it down to only 1/2 a tablet a day but something I would recommend checking with your veterinarian about. Also if you are not giving her fish oil pills or Fatty acid supplements, that is something else you can add to her diet. The Omega 3 which is found in fish oil pills helps condition her coat, skin, and joints (along with some other benefits) and it too also acts as an anti-inflammatory which will help. It does take a little bit of time for the oral medication to really kick in and start having an effect. I would say to give her another day and if still not noticing an improvement to check with your vet about getting her on a different kind of pain medication. (The glucosamine and Omega 3 will be more for a long term treatment, you will not notice the difference right away but with time it will help.) Best of Luck, and thanks for taking such great care of your girl!!

Thank you sooo much for your reply Erin. My vet did not mention glucosamine supplements however I did look into and found the 2 brands you mentioned. I almost purchased it however wanted to speak to my vet first. I read about fish oil too. Any brand you prefer? The lameness hasn't gone away :(

Hi Diem, How is Lilly doing? Hopefully she is doing better. The brand that we used at the hospital was "Allerderm Efa Caps" by Virbac. However, the website below gives you a little more info. that I found helpful. Best of Luck! https://topdogvitamins.com/6-dog-herbal-fish-oil-supplements-2017

Thanks again for reply. Lilly is the same. Still some lameness in her right hind leg after getting up from laying down. It looked like it was getting a little better bit last night the degree of lameness seemed to not have improved. We started giving her cosequin and fish oil is on its way.

Hi, sorry to hear there is not much improvement. I am sure you may already be doing this but thought I would mention just in case. Colder weather will effect their joints so make sure to keep her warm. Also her bedding has extra cushioning. And limit her jumping on and off couch, bed, ect. Best wishes

How is Lilly doing? My dog has been limping on his hind left, mostly after getting up for about 11 weeks. Been to vet and orthopedic vet. No signs of any issues. I am going to try fish oil. Also doing doggie physical therapy. He is a great pyr, collie mix. Anyone dealt with long term limp?
