Where can I find a sitter who can take care of a dachshund with IVDD (intervertebral disc disorder)?

My dachshund has IVDD (intervertebral disc disorder). He is 11 years old ,and has just went through his third back surgery. Not sure that he can handle another one at this point. We are seeking a sitter who can stay in our home with him when we travel. This person needs to understand the importance of safeguarding his environment in order to avoid another herniated disk. Any suggestions or advice?

When you search sitters under the House Sitting service, send a message to those that interest you regarding the level of care your dachshund needs due to IVDD, and ask if that's a commitment they can make...before setting up meet & greet. I've cared for a similar age & breed who also recuperated from IVDD. His parents and I took our time during the meet & greet to walk with him and discuss everything.

I'd suggest discussing the following: if he can be left alone and for what length of time, what precautions needed to be taken to safeguard his environment, how to safely limit his movements, any triggers for him that need to be avoided, how to pick him up if necessary, what is the preferred pace, path, duration, and number of walks daily.

Call Rover and see if they can find you a former vet tech or someone with comparable experience. Since I have no idea where you are located and how many are in the sitter pool, that's your best bet.

Sorry to hear that he has had 3 surgeries. hopefully this will be his last. I would recommend that you look for sitters who have Veterinary Experience. This would be your best bet in finding someone who already understands how important his recovery is. You do want to make sure you go over specifics on what you want and expect during the meet and greet but at least this way you will know that the sitter is trained in dealing with patients with IVDD. Best of Luck!!
