Most likely out of boredom. Without more info it's hard to give a good assessment but in my 20+ years of experience, more physical activity, more mental stimulation and crate training for when she is left alone will do the trick. If you want your dog to be quiet and well behaved when she is left alone for many hours, she needs to be tired out before and after. Depending on the size and fitness level of your dog, a good 30 to 60 minute walk in the AM and again when you return from work is needed if you expect her to be good all day.

Agreed --Boredom. Depending on the age, it can also be related to teething. Some dogs like the feeling of particular textures, as well. What kind of dog do you have? How old is she and what is your daily routine like with her? We might be able to give a little bit more insight.
