Why does my dog eat grass?

Why does my dog eat grass? How do I get her to stop?

Comments

I have heard that some dogs will do this do settle an upset stomach. My dog, who does not have access to grass all the time, seems to enjoy eating it just to eat it. Curious if others know other reasons. Making them stop, I am not sure.

I would not recommend letting them eat grass. Eating grass will often make them vomit. Whether or not they are nautious you do not want them to vomit. Its very hard on the system and could potentially lead to aspiration pneumonia from aspirating some of the vomitus into their lungs. I have also seen blades of grass caught in the tonsils or back of throat which can cause a lot of irritation, redness, coughing, gagging. This goes for dogs as well as cats.

Vets have noted that dogs eating grass is not really a bad thing. Some dogs eat it to help soothe an upset stomach and it could also provide some nutrients that the dog might be missing in their diet. Some dogs end up throwing it up after they eat but that could because of its different texture as it goes down to their stomach or if they quickly eat a large quantity of it.

Dogs eat grass for many reasons! Sometimes it can be due to a lack of mineral the dog is lacking or to ease an empty stomach. Grass can induce vomiting allowing the dog to throw up and feel better. If you are concerned by this activity ask your local vet as there may be something else going on !
