Can I get ringworm from my dog?

My dog has ringworm and I'm wondering if it is contagious. Can humans get it from dogs? Or is that unheard of?

Hi, Pieter. Yes, ringworm is zoonotic, meaning that it can be passed from animals to people. It is generally transmitted through direct contact, such as touching the affected area(s) on your pet. It does have a lengthy incubation period, and can take up to 2 weeks or more to appear once you've been infected. Usually a pet with ringworm has to be isolated in order to prevent them transferring it to other pets and family members; they also will receive oral medication and need medicated baths every few days to treat the fungal infection. Note that the spores from Ringworm travel and last for months. It is important avoid direct skin contact with the ringworm lesions. Use gloves to administer the topical med. Wash pet blankets/bed often, and don't allow contact with other animals. Wash hands after touching your pet every time.
