Can a sitter change their rate after you have already booked and paid Rover?

I booked a sitter months in advance of a family trip. Yesterday he reached out and said that due to demand he is increasing his price and if I don't like it, I can just cancel. Does Rover have any policies against this bate and switch type of thing? I understand increasing prices, but on people that have already committed and paid through Rover? If this is permitted, I don't think I will continue using the program. No benefit for planning ahead.

The sitter has to honor the original booking price. He/she cannot charge you any more nor is it up to you to find another sitter.

As Carmen suggested, you should definitely let Rover Customer Support know what the sitter is attempting to do. I don't know what kind of service you've booked, but I would be concerned that this sitter may be a no-show if you've booked drop-ins, walks or house sitting. If you are boarding the dog and fear he may not take good care of your dog due to this incident, then use Rover to find you a replacement sitter. Rover will pay any difference if this sitter lets you down.

BTW, don't cancel the booking. If a sitter cancels the booking, then it affects his status on Rover and may even get his account suspended. Don't make it easy for the sitter to wriggle out of this commitment.

Too late this was a couple of months ago and we had to cancel so that we could book someone else. Really bad business. It will come back around.

That's too bad. The sitter got off scot-free because you initiated the cancellation, It is a violation of Rover's Terms of Service to pull what he did.

2.5 Bookings. Pet Owners and Service Providers transact with each other on the Rover.com Service when they both agree to a “booking” that specifies the fees, time period, cancellation policy....One you complete a Booking, you agree to honor the price and other terms of that Booking.

A sitter's rates are locked in once the stay is booked. If that sitter raises rates between date of booking and date stay, your cost should remain unchanged.

I believe it is unprofessional and unethical to change the fee for a stay once it has been booked unless the conditions of the stay have changed - dates are changed, another dog is added, extra services are requested, etc.

It's bad PR, bad judgement and bad practice. I don't know any sitters who would do this.

My advice:

1) Contact Rover support and let them know what is going on. They will be able to look at the messages you have exchanged for a complete picture of the situation.

2) Don't let this experience color your opinion of Rover as a whole, and use a different sitter next time.

Best of luck!

Thanks! This was actually a couple of months ago. I did reach out to Rover and shared the exchange and got no response. Definitely bad business and you are right I wouldn't want him in my house at this point anyway. They sad part is we left him a good review during his first visit which helped him!

You can also leave another review. Please reach out to rover support again and ask for a response. There are a lot of Great rover hosts that go the extra mile and provide great service. Rover is always making changes to improve services to our customers and hosts.
