There are a few reasons why dogs stare out the window. First, it may be stimulating and prevents boredom. Second, a dog may be protecting his or her territory like a watchman. Third, some experts say it's a form or relaxation. As long as it is watching nonaggressively, it's nothing to worry about.

He could be protecting his territory, watching for family, friends, or foes. Since dog's vision isn't as strong as ours but their sense of smell is much better than ours, it's possible the dog is actually smelling all the external scents through the window.
