Why does my dog have crusty eyes?

My dog has a lot of eye goop that becomes crusty. Should I give him eye drops for this? Or is this a natural cleansing process?

Eye discharge in dogs can be caused by a number of things, from viruses to allergies. If it is excessive or consistent - yellow or yellow-green - it could be a sign of an infection or other eye problems. Check with your veterinarian to find out if treatment is needed.

Please do not give your dog eye drops unless instructed to by your vet. Eye "boogers" every now and then are normal and can be caused by many things. If it persists for a long period of time, it is something to keep an eye as it could be from allergies, an infection or other illness.
