Does my dog have an ear infection?

My dog's right ear seems to be in a lot of pain. I can't tell if it's too red, but I'm worried his ear is infected. Is there something i can give him for this? And how do I check for infection, just to make sure?

Main symptoms to look for at home would be pawing at the ears or side of the face and shaking of the head.

A veterinarian can usually diagnose an ear infection by examining the ear canal and ear drum with a magnifying ear cone similar to devices used on people. This may require sedation, especially if the dog is very painful. A sample of ear discharge may be examined to look for bacteria, yeast, and parasites.

You should never treat an ear infection yourself or you could make it worse. Vetrinary care is required.
