Why does my dog eat so fast?

 While this is a fairly common behavior for pets, most of the time veterinarians don’t recognize why pets eat so quickly. Nutritional deficiencies don’t seem to play a role, however, in multi-dog households, competition may in fact play a role in rapid eating.  In those situations it may be best to separate dogs when feeding, which can often solve the problem. Feeding smaller amounts over several minutes, and/or smaller more frequent meals is one step that will work for some dogs Newer options include special dog bowls made with different sized knobs at the bottom, and forces dogs to fish around the knobs at the bottom of the dish to get to the kibble.

Some dogs just have it in them to eat that way. I actually just had a regular stay come in and she started eating that way out of the blue. They bought her a "slow down bowl" and it makes her have to concentrate on eating. It is well worth having one!

Agree with previous post. Some dogs in single dog homes also just seem wired to inhale their bowl before that nutritional resource could possibly be removed. These dogs are also known to empty their specially designed dog bowls to slow eating habits in what seems like the blink of an eye.

If you have more than one dog they will eat there food fast to keep the other dogs from getting there food. There are some breeds like the Lab. that will wolf down there food but that is just how they are. They best thing to do is to try the slow down bowl and see if that doesn't help. If you have mult. dogs feed them in different places in your home or feed them in there crate.
