What info do you (and do you not) put on dog ID tags?

I'm getting some dog ID tags made for our pups in case our younger pup runs off (even the local dog park is massive). I've heard some stories of strangers stealing owner info for nefarious purposes, so I'm wondering what info I should and should absolutely NOT put on dog ID tags. Should I put a fake dog name in case someone tries to claim one of my dogs as their own (or would that help them)? I'm assuming phone numbers are good info. Anything else? Thanks all!

I haven't heard of anyone using the tag info that way. However, one way around that is to instead list a service like 24petwatch.com which has a toll free # and uses an ID# to identify the dog, rather than name. Definitely you'd want to include a phone number that will be answered 24 x 7.

If a dog gets away, Good Samaritan dog-lovers will try to dial the number. I've been told the dogs that arrive at shelters with tags get first priority as far as trying to reunite dogs with owners, long before they check if a dog is chipped. Having a dog micro chipped is wise, but in order to access that info. the dog would have to be taken to a vet or shelter and most are closed evenings, weekends, and holidays (including 4th of July - the most notorious dog run away holiday). And I know of more than a couple good Samaritan dog lovers that have used collar tags to dial owners when they found runaways during those times (evenings & holidays).

Concur about tags being addressed first at a shelter or by animal control. They don't automatically scan every dog on intake. A tag is a must and I require all my boarding dogs to wear tags, regardless of their being chipped.

Having a legible pet tag is always a great idea, but having your pup chipped is a better way to insure a vet or animal shelter can locate you if your pup runs away

I think it's safe to put the dogs name and phone numbers they can be reached. I've heard of people putting the pets vet name and number also. A micro chip is the best method to secure your dog's safe return if they ever are lost.
