Truffle Hunter?

asked 2014-11-19 10:40:29 -0500

My dog B keeps finding and eating MUSHROOMS out of the leaf litter in my neighborhood. Should I be concerned? No ill effects so far and she gobbles them up before I can trade her for a real treat.

A lot of sources list mushrooms on the list of foods that are dangerous for dogs, BUT, just like for humans, only some varieties are problematic. Culinary mushrooms are fine (button/white/crimini/portabello anyway, as they're all the same species; I haven't researched other varieties since I don't often have them in my home), as are many other wild species, so it might be worth it to identify the variety your dog finds delicious to ensure they are safe. However, since your dog has developed this habit, you'll always have some worry about her getting into something unsafe, so it's probably a good idea to train her not to root around for them. A really solid "leave it" will be your best friend.

Basic leave it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQdg0...

More advanced: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYsdo... (the example is countersurfing, but this will be helpful for any temptation in a less controlled environment.

That would definitely stress me out. I would be concerned for sure. Would it be possible to try to keep her on a shorter leash?

She does it when you think she's peeing or pooping! So frustrating.

Maybe try to identify what type of mushrooms they are if there are more around the same area. This could ease any concern that you have :)
