I provide daycare for an intact shih tzu and he smells disgusting. I have tried to give him a bath and he still stinks after. I think the stench may be related to the fact that he is not neutered but I'm not sure. How should I tell the owner that I can not continue caring for him because his odor makes me physically nauseous.
Let the family know that you've developed a sensitivity to their dog and give them a week or two to find a replacement.
Sensitivities are not uncommon and are nothing personal.
One concern is that the pup has an infection which is causing the odor, in which case I would mention it to the owner and suggest they bring it up at their next vet appt. Sometimes, if you're around a certain smell all of the time, you can go 'nose blind' and not even realise that there is a smell. So, the owner may not even notice.
Sorry to hear that you're dealing with a stinky pooch! As some other sitters have suggested, it's best to discuss it with the client. It might be an underlying medical condition. Many Shih Tzu's have allergy/skin conditions that can leave them smelling a little less than ideal. Perhaps mentioning to the client if they've noticed the smell as well, and working together to find a solution. Obviously, we don't want to insult the client - so making sure to highlight that your concerns are for a happy and healthy pup.
I've found that scented baby wipes, Earthbath natural deodorizing spray, and paw/face/butt wipes after walks helps to keep the stench at bay! Works well for a Shih Tzu and Pug that I regularly sit :)

I would start by mentioning that you noticed Fido "has gotten so stinky lately", and offer basic grooming services to fix the problem. I know you've already tried bathing him, but it's a gentle way to broach the topic. Also, you need to use a good shampoo, as they are not all equally effective at neutralizing odors.
If they turn down your "groom service", then maybe at the next visit gently break it to them that you don't think you'll be able to continue to care for him because he is causing the whole house to smell.
I'd like to see you keep a client if you can find a good solution!

Oh, yes, I know, but it may have just been the shampoo she used. That's why I made the comment about using a good quality shampoo. Some dogs just smell so badly that they need "stronger stuff". I have a client who always stinks, and I give him a bath on arrival. Some shampoos don't do anything.
I've used him as my guinea pig for a lot of different shampoos. I've been disappointed by some brands and surprised by others. One thing is certain: if it will get HIS smell out, it will make any dog smell nice! haha
I am taking care of a stinky dog right now, and won't take care of her again. I'll probably have to mop all the living areas (I suspect leaky bladder).I have other customers coming over, and they will smell her and maybe not feel good about my house. Maybe the stinky dog's owner doesn't think the smell is bad, so I'm not going to say anything to them about it. No problem, just never again sit for the dog.
Buy a specific spray so he does not smell that bad anymore
