What's the best dog shampoo for dry itchy skin?

This is definitely a loaded question. Make sure allergies are ruled out as well as fleas. Supplemental fat in the diet can be helpful as well as a shampoo with oatmeal & lavender.

I love Earthbath Oatmeal and Aloe Shampoo or their Tea Tree and Aloe Shampoo, which can help with hot spots, or Espree Oatmeal and Baking Soda Shampoo, which is also good for stinky dogs, or their Tea Tree and Aloe Medicated Shampoo. It is also a good idea to rule out food allergies, common in many dogs, and look at your current dog food choice.

The best thing to do for a dog with dry/sensitive/chronic itchy skin is to discuss options with your veterinarian. Why is your dog itchy? Is he on flea prevention? Does he have flaky, dry skin? Is he exhibiting signs of allergies? The way you approach these issues is different, and you would be looking for a different prescription level shampoo to deal with each.

In general, if you want to try an over the counter option, try something like this: non-scented, oatmeal, soap-free shampoo (made specifically for dogs).

I agree with all of the other answers and think once you rule out dietary issues, if you are still searching for a topical solution, oatmeal can be great for dry skin. As opposed to sudsy oatmeal shampoos that can sometimes dry a pups skin out more, I will sometimes use steel cut oats I get from the health food store. I climb in the bath with my pup in my swimsuit and massage the oats through her fur with warm water. She enjoys the time connecting with me, and it makes bath time a positive thing because she's getting a massage at the same time!

You can get great skin friendly shampoos at your vet. Malaseb is a favorite for itchy dogs!!!

I have three totally different dogs. I have a pit bull a chow chow and a shih tzu. my pit bull gets medicated tea tree shampoos or earth baths green tea which I absolutely love! or tropicleans aloe for the pit and chow chow. i use a basic tearless for the faces on all three. tho i just picked up nooties tearless its a natural shampoo but not one i'll be using again. i have 15 dif types of dog shampoos lol.

i like buddy wash shampoo and conditioners too it has rose mary and mint soothing for the skin.

but for my chow chow i recently ordered offline #1 all systems pure white lightening shampoo https://petapproves.com/best-smelling-dog-shampoo-reviews/ (https://petapproves.com/best-smelling...) it helps lighten stains. you can use it on white dogs and cream dogs so you can use it on both of your dogs. and than i use an espree conditioner after, next bottle i'll be going to the earth bath conditioner since thats what i use at work and i really do like earth bath products.

I use Dr. Bronner's soap diluted in a gallon jug with some ACV poured in. Wash with it and then rinse off. Then in a separate gallon jug of water, 3:1 ratio of water to ACV as a 2nd rinse. Do not rinse this off. Let dry. They will not smell like ACV once they are dry. I have bulldogs and boxers and have been using this combination since they were all very young.
