What is the best dog harness?

My dog is a decent walker, but does much better when he's on a harness than on just a leash and collar. However, he has a somewhat narrow chest and so unfortunately many harnesses have a chest strap that's too big...which means he's able to chew the chest strap. He's gone through 3 harnesses in the past week and a half, so I'm hoping to find other solutions! Any suggestions?

Wow. Three harnesses in a week and a half. The Freedom Harness by 2HoundsDesign is becoming increasingly popular, but it sounds like you should investigate the Perfect Fit from Dog Games Shop (out of the UK). They allow you to custom design a harness individually selecting the size on each of the three components. I haven't used it, but it sounds pretty awesome.

Does he wear the harness only when he's walking? Are you able to interrupt him when he starts chewing? You could try spraying the chest strap with some Bitter Apple spray. Just be very careful with this, because he could potentially develop a dislike for the harness, instead of a dislike for chewing the harness. Similarly, thoroughly wash your hands after applying the spray, so he doesn't grow to dislike your hands or treats given from your hands.

Good luck!

If your dog is chewing chest straps you should try one that is adjustable all over. I have the Kurgo http://www.kurgo.com/dog-harnesses/ (dog harness) and you can adjust the back AND the chest, which may solve your problem!
