Why does my dog scratch her ears?

Your dog may have an ear infection. Which may be caused by ear mites, yeast or bacteria. If you notice a foul smell inside your dogs ears, your dog shaking his head and Scratching you may want to see your local vet for an ear swab. 👂

Same reason you and I do. it may itch or there may be some gunk in there. a lot of dog breeds, particulary dogs with flappy ears have a much more open ear canal and allows different things to get in there and cause irritation. Allergies could easily be the cause as well. If your dog is scratching their ears or shaking their head (near violently) give them a sniff, if it's sour and there is obvious gunk in there it's most likely a yeast infection. This can be taken care of easily with some meds from the vet. if it doesn't smell and is gunky, you can get some OTC cleaning solution from any pet store or just use a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol.

Could just be dirt, you could start out by wiping the inside of the ear flap (don't go too far into the ear canal). Use a thin moist cloth (not paper), even a washcloth might work if it's a large dog. Use Q-tips to get between cartilage.

If it keeps happening often enough that you are noticing a marked increase take your dog to the vet. It is most likely an ear infection. Easily treated if handled quickly. Plus you don't want your pet in pain any longer than necessary.
