I have an 8-month-old Pembroke Welsh Corgi and for the past couple of weeks, he has been on and off when eating his food. Sometimes when we give him his food he will eat it and other times he won't. There has been days where he hasn't eaten 1 out of the 2 meals. We are also in the process of switching foods thinking it will help but yesterday we had the same issue.
Dogs will self regulate their food intake. As long as he is drinking and there are no signs of illness, he should be fine. Sometimes adding a bit more exercise helps get the system going, too.
When you switch foods, it's advised to transition gradually rather than make a complete switch all at once. Switching foods too often can also create a picky eater, but sometimes it may take trying several to find the right one. There could be a few reasons why he;'s not eating, ranging from he's just not hungry or not into that food served ... to he has an upset stomach (such as pancreatitis) to other medical concerns (such as possible ingestion of a foreign substance). I'd advise that you may want to call puppy's vet and ask if they have any suggestions.
Sometimes when transitioning food your pet can get an upset stomach and lose its appetite if you don't transition slowly. It could also be the food you are feeding that may not fit well. It can also depend on how you are storing your food as well. If you store your food in a plastic container I would recommend keeping the food in the bag it came in and put the bag in the container or store in a glass container that is cleaned regularly because if you place it directly in a plastic container it builds bacteria and can upset your dogs stomach and can make them not have much of an appetite.
My husky does this a lot, once problems at the vet are ruled out maybe take a look at his activity level. Is he being exercised enough to need all of that protein in the food? Some dogs know not to continue eating if they aren't burning enough calories. I realized My husky does this if she is not exercised consistently and properly
Unfortunately, some dogs are just not food motivated and can skip meals. If this is a new behavior and you notice any other signs, such as vomiting/diarrhea/lethargy I would recommend taking him to the vet. Also, if you are not transitioning his food gradually, a sudden food change can cause some GI upset, so try to gradually transition over a 2 week period.
You want to make sure to pay attention to the dogs behavior. Does he seem lethargic? Activity normal? Drinking water? How are his stools? Is he eating treats throughout the day? Current on his vaccinations? Depending on your answers will really tell you If your puppy just does not like his new food or if he is sick, in which case I would than recommend that you take your puppy to see a Veterinarian.
Sometimes he can be a little bit lazy, his drinking and activity is normal, his stools are solid not too hard not to wet and ever since we have had this problem we have cut out treats.
What are you currently feeding and how are you storing the food?
Not eating can be a sign of not feeling well. As long as the dog is still drinking water he's not in any danger.
