I usually charge $25 per walk and $20 per drop in but my new client wants to renegotiate. What is a good amout that will appeal to her?

Let me elaborate. I received a new request today for a woman who lives ~10 minutes away from me. She wants me to walk her 5 month old puppy at 11am every day for 30 minutes; and come back at 4pm each day to let the dog pee/poop. I told her I do $25 per half hour walk and $20 per drop in, but she wants to negotiate. I recently raised my rates because I just quit my full-time job. What do you all think is a fair deal? Thank you!

I don't know about your area, but for mine that's a fair rate. Honestly if you're driving 40 minutes in the day and spending an hour with the puppy that's 2 hours for $45 not including what you're paying in gas. If you really need the job maybe drop the walk to $20.

At $45/ day, she would be paying $450 for 10 days or $1,750 for a month of puppy walks. I can see where she may be coming from. There are a couple of things here:

First, if you are set on your rates, then stick to them and decline the Stay. There are most likely plenty of other Sitters available to her within the price range she may be looking for. Most of us set our rates based on costs (gas, time, etc.).

Second, look at the fact that this may be a long-term gig and steady. Some of us offer extended stay rates. If you are open to it, consider offering her an extended-stay rate.

Really, it's all up to you

2 good points. I may adjust since it is going to be a long-term gig. Thank you!

Hi Carlee: I noticed that you don't have a puppy rate. I charge a little more for puppies because they are more work to look after, and there would probably be some training re-enforcement involved. You could mention that (how the client is saving $$ already), or you could just do 2 drop ins, and include a short walk on one or both.

Ah I didn't even realize there was such thing as a puppy rate. i will look into that. Thanks so much

It really sounds like she needs doggy day care. That way he can get frequent potty breaks through out the day. Puppies are alot of work so yes there is an option to charge differently for them.

I think your prices as states are perfectly reasonable. You run a business and are in this to make money, to be honest. You will be making 2 round trips a day to her house, so there is a toll on your time and your car. As you said, you are doing this full time. Think about whether or not she would try and negotiate with a professional facility for services. I don't think so.

If this will be a long term ciient and the dog behavior is reasonable, then you might offer to drop the drop-in visit rate to $15 and not stay the full 30 minutes. Offer this discount for a weekly commitment, possibly, as in, book me for a whole week (and several weeks in a row) and you will get this discount. I personally like the idea of a guaranteed client & income, but it all depends on you.

Yeah that's the thing. I am a bad negotiator because I am kind of timid and don't like scaring off people. I will think about it. Thank you!

I have a client that lives 10 min. From me and I give her a discounted rate for sure. When she wants multiple visits I would usually round it out to 25 a day and do each visit for 10-15. Min rather than 30. She is mostly concerned about feedings and potty not so much the time.
