Why does my dog roll around in the grass?

Dogs love to scratch their backs! They could also have smelled a scent they wanted to take with them on their body. Yuck!

Rolling in the grass serves several functions. It very well may be a way of getting rid of any sort of uncomfortable or itchy debris that might be stuck to your dog’s back, such as dirt, etc. Grass is mildly abrasive and individual blades of grass can function a little like tines on a comb or bristles on a brush. Rolling around the grass may help loosen up dirt stuck to your dog’s back and help him self-groom difficult-to-reach areas. It may also help brush away loose fur clumps. It can also be that they are trying to cover a scent with their own scent.

Dogs roll around in the grass for several reasons. There's not one main cause for it. Some of these reasons may include: alleviating a bad itch, obsessive behavior, getting rid of a bad smell, or they may have even inherited it from wolves.

Dogs roll around in the grass because it's usually cool to the touch and if they are outside their home, the will roll in the grass to mask their scent from anything potentially dangerous. I looked it up after my dog rolled in deer pee 3 times. Deer pee is not something you wanna smell. Ever. Especially 3 times in one day
