How do I get my dog to stop eating poop?

Pineapple is safe in small amounts for dogs and when it is digested it alters the "flavor" of the poo. If you do not have fresh pineapple near you, they do make tablets that you can give to the dog whose poop is being eaten to discourage their interest in ingesting poop.

If you put a spoonful of canned pumpkin in each meal, it'll make the poop repulsive to your dog. The pumpkin is healthy and tastes great in the meal, but is an excellent deterrent once it comes out the other end

After training my dog on the command "Leave it" I was able to get him to stop. Before then I would bring treats with me on walks to distract him or pull him away but this was also enforcing the behavior. Another great command to teach dogs is "look at me". I use this when he is eating things he shouldn't or barking at things he shouldn't. It refocuses his attention on me and then I direct him to do what I want.

I've been told dogs that eat poop (not necessarily their own) are lacking protein in their food. My dog never did this, but she gets some broiled chick now and again to keep this from happening!

Hi! Dogs may eat poop because they are missing nutrients in their diet! Usually a vet will check out and can help you find a new food to better supplement their diet.
