Why is my dog scared of everything?

Help! My dog is scared of everything and I don't know what to do. He isn't afraid of just a few specific sound or sight, but trembles all the time and likes to hide. What could be the reason for this?

This could be due to fear, anxiety, or a number of other things. It also could be due to his past, if he was ever abused mentally, physically, or emotionally. Dogs tend to have the same emotions as we do.

This could be a self-confidence/esteem issue. I would recommend taking your dog to an obedience course with other dogs of a similar size. Training and guidance from other more confident pooches can help build their esteem and comfort levels.

While we all worry about who, what, why my dog is scared. The reasoning behind it isn't always as simple as it's this or that. There could be a number of reasons why your dog could be scared. These reasons could quite possibly be some of the more "common" sources of fear.

  • Separation anxiety
  • Overly energetic and does not know how to release energy, but through fear
  • Emotional trauma (i.e. stray living in streets, previous abusive family, etc.)
  • Learned behavior

Without knowing a little more of the your doggy's history it becomes increasingly difficult to resolve the problem. But luckily there many home remedies to help.

  1. Calming music (such as nature sounds or calming classical music)
  2. Cuddling / Massaging
  3. Using a "Thundershirt"
  4. Using a small amount of Children's Benadryll (generic name: diphenhydramine) to help reduce anxiety.
  5. Using DAP (dog appeasing pheromone, use continuously to increase effectiveness)
  6. Using Rescue Remedy (natural supplementation)

Hopefully some of these tips help. But for severe cases and failed attempts it is always best to visit your vet for further guidance and assistance.

If your dog is a rescue, he could be suffering from anxiety and "doggie ptsd" due to an abuse history. Unfortunately many pups have abuse histories, apparent or unapparent, that make them skittish and anxious. Your pup may also lack self-confidence! Regardless, a consistent routine and a safe, loving home will help with time. Additionally, training with a specialist might alleviate some of his behaviors.
