Why is my dog peeing blood?

Help! I wasn't sure at first, but I think there are definite traces of blood in my dog's urine. Why is this happening? Is it an emergency??

Hi Lizzy,

Urinating blood is normally a sign of a bladder infection, crystals or stones in the bladder. You do want to take him/her to the vet. They will need to do blood work/urinalysis, xrays, +/- ultrasound, +/- injections and send home with meds.
As far as it being an emergency..... If she/he is straining to urinate or seems to be having a hard time urinating than yes it is an emergency. Bladder infections can be painful and uncomfortable.

Good Luck!

Sounds like stones or crystals! Our sheltie has this issue. Sometimes he will even drip blood here and there as we will find it on our floors. The issue has been helped, however, with a special dog food diet. Do NOT feed him table scraps from this point forward, if you do. Take him to the vet. He will be fine. ๐Ÿ˜Š
