Can I get pink eye from my dog?

Help! My dog's eye got red and gross a few days ago. I took him to the vet and he said he had pink eye, but I didn't remember to ask if I could get it. Should I be washing my hands and house like crazy?

There are actually a couple different kinds of pink eye. I am guessing it is the bacterial version in this case. I would recommend cleaning their bedding and avoid touching their eye and then your face. Wash your hands if you come in contact with the eye and after applying any medication to the area. Once they have cleared the infection, clean their bedding again.

Depending on exactly what pathogen is infecting your dog's eye, you certainly have a chance of getting it! I don't think you need to start scrubbing down your walls and steam cleaning your carpet, but wash your hands after you administer his eye drops and try to keep from touching your face after petting him.

I'll echo what everyone else has said; that it depends on the pathogen or type of pink eye your dog has. You don't need to burn all of your belongings, but do wear a pair of gloves if you can while administering any medication to your dogs eye, remove the gloves safely (google contact free way to remove gloves), and keep your hands washed with warm water. I would also wash any bedding, and if possible keep your pup off of the furniture and beds for a few days/a week. Good luck and I hope your pup feels better soon!
