Breed is less important than the individual dog's personality and temperament. Both German shepherds and golden retrievers can be great with kids.

If you get a puppy, look for stable, kid-loving parents. If getting an adult, look for a confident dog who isn't too rambunctious or sensitive.

Monitor child-dog interactions, especially with the 3-year-old. At that age they can get pretty rough, and just because a dog puts up with it doesn't mean he should have to.

Our family dog that we got when I was a baby was a G. Shep and she was great. And when my daughter was 1 1/2 the dog i adopted was also a G. Shep. She was very tolerant of my daughter but just because she was good with her didn't mean I left them together unsupervised.

Golden retrievers are great dogs as well. Take your time searching for the right dog -- friendly and laid-back.

Both breeds are equally good family dogs. If you get a puppy, though, make sure that the parents have "Excellent" hip ratings, as both of those breeds can develop very painful hip problems, and they will live shorter lives.

I had no idea both breeds could have hip problems , Thanks Jessica M

This website gives the pros vs cons in a very non judgmental way. http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/dogb...

I haven't found any other website that gives such balanced and honest review of the breeds. Certainly there are exceptions to every breed, however that will give you a solid baseline
