For tax purposes, are we small business owners or employees of Rover?

Since Rover sends us a W-9 it seems like we would be employees of the company, however I see many people filing as a small business owner. I can't seem to find the answer anywhere else on Rover, and don't want to misfile my taxes or need to pay more for the small business tax than necessary. Thank you.

As mentioned above and this is still relevant, we're not Rover's employees actually. We're just some kind of guys who're working with different companies on their own as well as with Rover - read small business owners. But nevertheless, I disagree with the information above that we don't need to provide tax reports by W-9 form, at least I do so for one year so far. And it's quite a simple thing because you can do so online with the tool like that https://w9.pdffiller.com It's paid, but I don't see anything criminal in paying some bucks twice a year in order to get the tax papers clean faster

PayPal sends a W-9 to the IRS if you make over $600/yesr. We are independent contractors and report income from pet services on a Schedule C, unless we have set up an LLC or an S Corp. as our business entity. We DO NOT work for Rover.

Sitters are not Rover employees; therefore, we wouldn't get W-9s. We are independent contractors and need to report our earnings on Schedule C. Rover may or may not even send you a 1099. However, there is now the ability to see your year-to-date payout on the Payments page.

Also, there is another recent thread in which Cari provides some answers.

Hi, I'm so new to this. Do you know if the Proprieter on the schedule C form is http://Rover.com or myself?

And you should check with your local government to see if licensing or zoning approval is required to operate a business in you locality or you risk getting shut down. And don't forget about obtaining independent insurance as the Rover insurance plan has a lot of limitations

Hi Megan: I'm not a tax professional, so you should consult one. However, unless you have your own business, you would be considered self employed, thereby using the Schedule C for income taxes. Some sitters pay quarterly taxes to avoid a lump sum at the end of the year. This is my first full year and I've been setting aside 30% of each deposit to pay for taxes at the end of the year. Next year I plan on paying taxes quarterly. You can go to your state's website for tax forms and tax information. I hope this helps...at least a little!

My understanding, since I get paid through PayPal, is that PayPal sends you tax information on the money they send you.
