Is it acceptable/customary to charge extra for stays that run late?

I recently had a stay that was for 3 nights. On the last night, the following day the owners did not return home until almost midnight the the next night. They were gone early morning Friday, Saturday, Sunday and returned home at 11:30pm on Monday. I stayed at their home on Friday, Saturday and sunday night, but I had to return to their home late in the day on Monday to let the dogs out and feed. Does anyone else charge an extended stay fee for this? It just seems rover pays us per night, when actually, I cared for these dogs for 4 days vs. 3 nights.

All stays (boarding or housesitting) are billed in 24-hour increments. That is why it is important to get the start and end times established from the outset so that the billing can be done correctly. Because they didn't return until very late on the last day, you should have charged them for another whole day of services. In your particular case, they left early Friday and paid for three nights, which means they only paid for services through early morning Monday, not close to midnight on Monday. People are naturally going to take advantage of you if you don't know how the system operates and inform the client when their stay officially ends.
