Why are Nylabones even allowed to be sold?

A dog I was sitting chewed on a Nylabone Puppy Chew I had purchased for a puppy that was here the week before. (Thank goodness, the puppy never used it.) The dog is now at the vet and VERY sick. What the HECK??? Why even sell something if it is that dangerous???

This is just one of many web pages I found of horror stories about Nylabone https://www.purelypets.com/wellness-c...

The chew we had was this one: http://www.petsmart.com/dog/toys/nyla...

All the "horror stories" on the web page you provided the link for are all from blockages in the digestive tract after dogs swallowed parts of the bone. All dog toys/bones pose this same risk of possible obstruction if the dog swallows any piece of the toy/bone. (Even a very small piece is capable of causing serious harm to your dog.) You must ALWAYS supervise your dog with any toys or bones!!

Stay away from Nylabones and raw hide.

I have a small breed dog. When he was a puppy, our vet told me to never give my pup a nylabone. He suggested freezing a whole carrot and giving that to him instead. Basically, while he was teething the frozen carrot was soothing on his gums but there was no danger of the carrot being as hard as a nylabone and cracking his little teeth. Also, once the carrot thawed to a mushy-ish state, it was a healthy, edible treat.

That's a great idea!

Nylabones are not dangerous or poisonous. Was it an allergic reaction? Did the previous puppy leave bacteria on the bone that made dog #2 sick?

See, that makes me feel better knowing I'm not the only person who didn't know about how dangerous they are. I've edited my post with info about the problems MANY people have had.

My mother-in-law had one of her dogs manage to chew it in half and almost choke on it, but I chock that up in the same level of risk you see with anything you let them chew on! What did the vet say he was sick with?

Most of the stories are an issue with the dog eating the bones, and dogs are not supposed to be able to. Always supervise your dog when he is chewing any item. The same stories can be found regarding rawhide chews, pig ears, beef bones, and any other chew. You just have to be careful
