Client asking for references?

Hi, just had my first meet and greet that lead to a booking! Super excited about that. We had a pretty normal conversation about her expectations, the dog's schedule, etc. What caught me off guard was when she asked for 4 real-life references (obviously outside of Rover because she knew this was my first meet & greet). Off the top of my head I gave her my dad's phone number - he knows best how I helped care for our dog his whole life - and my boyfriend's parents', whose dogs I've watched several times while they were on long vacations. The next day, the client messaged me again and asked for 2 more non-family references... I gave her a previous boss' number, and a former babysitting client's. (Of course I asked them first and they expected this woman's call.)

Is this unheard of for just 2 nights of house sitting? During the meet & greet I casually mentioned that Rover does background checks on all of us sitters. I felt somewhat uncomfortable giving her all these people's phone numbers since it seems like normally that's what the Rover platform is trying to avoid. Like how we communicate through Rover messages instead of our cell phone numbers.

Anyway, just wondering what everyone's experience with this is, and if I should expect this in the future and bring my references' contact info with me all the time.

I had a similar situation when I was new to Rover, and was not comfortable giving personal info of potential references for a stranger. Fortunately the client and I realized we have several mutual acquaintances, and all was well. She has become a good repeat client. Might try that approach.

Given that you currently don't have any reviews or testimonials on your profile, it does not seem so out of the question. You could ask the four people you mentioned if they would be willing to submit a testimonial to rover, which could be added. https://support.rover.com/hc/en-us/ar... Definitely ask your first client to write a review after the stay too as she understands this is important.

When you have both reviews and testimonials, it's rare to get reference requests. Afterward, hopefully, you will not get many requests for references...and then you can choose to either provide them or direct them to what others have written on your profile and remind them that Rover did a background check on you too.

I agree, ask those people to do testimonials for you to get started with your profile. I had 3 strong testimonials when i started and never once have been asked for outside references.

In my opinion, that's alot of references! I've been at dog rescue shelter groups where people adopt dogs ask for 3 that aren't related. So in that case it's usually husband /wife, vet and friend.

But I do agree that's quite excessive especially after they've met you. Most people should be able to judge your character and skill level in person. If they meet you and still uneasy, I dont know how talking to more strangers will help.

To me that screams "high maintenance".

If you have testimonials down I would refer them to the website. Maybe something like "Oh you musta missed online, I have that information there "

Given that the services you provide involve entering a client's home when they are not there, asking for references isn't completely unreasonable. As Deb and Meagan wrote, once you have some strong reviews and testimonials, potential owners may feel more comfortable with your documented experience. However, there may some owners who don't completely trust the posted reviews (I can recall several questions posted here about whether Rover posts all reviews, even negative ones) and they may ask for the outside references that they can call. You have them now and it's good to keep them handy.
