What's wrong with my dog's leg?

I think my dog had a charley horse yesterday - is that possible? We just moved, so he's been on mostly hard floors or thin blankets. (We put down a bunch more blankets after this happened.) He was lying there and then just got up and started whining while holding is back left leg off the ground. It didn't hurt him when I touched it and massaged it. No cuts or anything visibly wrong. Awhile later he did it again to a milder degree. Now his leg is kind of stiff and he doesn't put all his weight on it. Sometimes he's hesitant to get up and/or go outside, other times he walks just find for a little while. I'm worried that if I don't do something, it may become a permanent problem. Is there anything I should do? What would happen if I didn't do anything? Should I let him rest as much as he wants or encourage him to walk around to keep the blood moving and healing? Any ideas are helpful. My dog is about 10 years old, in great shape, mixed breed (pit/lab?).

I'd recommend checking in with your vet.

Based on my personal experience, my dog was limping similarly to how you described and after taking him to the vet we found he had soft tissue damage. In my case, this was caused likely from jumping down off something, or landing on it wrong when walking/running around. Giving my dog some doctor prescribed pain relief medication and rest (allowing him to use it normally but laying off hard exercise) fixed it for my pup. Hopefully that helps!

I'm coming to this late but the first thing I thought of was a cruciate ligament pull or tear. Hope that isn't the case but agree that a vet visit would have been in order. Either way given his age and size arthritis is very likely too and it's extremely painful at times.

Sounds like arthritis to me especially since it seems to come and go. Healthy, in shape dogs can have it, its just an age thing. Keep massaging nightly. Get some arthritis supplements. You can get those at any Walmart.
