I just adopted a new puggle puppy, and she loves cuddling! She insists on sleeping in the bed. I enjoy it, but worry it's going to increase her separation anxiety. Where does your dog sleep?
Anything with fur can sleep on my bed if they want to. That is one of my first questions for owners - where does the dog sleep? I don't want to instill any bad habits, but if the dog is used to sleeping on the bed, he or she is welcome there. I also have couches, dog beds and crates if the owner (or pet) prefers one over another.
In my experience, it is definitely worth holding out and not letting your new puppy sleep in your bed - at least for a while. I had my frenchie puppy sleep in a crate next to my bed for the first few months and I really believe that helped her.
I agree with Jessica. You can enjoy cuddle time with your puppy on the couch, but let your bed be your personal domain!

Thank you so much for your input! Ultimately, I've been allowing her to sleep in my bed, but also working on crate training. She even slept in her crate for the whole night the other day!
My dogs have always been welcome to sleep in my bed ... I enjoy it. I've also never had a dog with separation anxiety, so I can't really say if there's a connection or not. I DO know that crate training when done right is good for the dog ( his safe haven/personal space, etc.), but never having had a crate, I'm no expert on that either.
You just described me, my lifestyle, and any dogs I've ever lived with to a tee! Too funny.
Heck yes, all dogs are welcome. However space is limited and restricted to a first come first lie basis!
I don't allow it, but not for any reasons having to do with my dogs. My partner and I are both mildly allergic, and even though you become mostly desensitized to the animals you live with, the bedroom is a dander-free zone. Some dogs will become territorial over the bed if given access to it. Some won't. Just like some will guard their dog bed or kennel, or whatever else they may see fit to guard. Some dogs will develop separation anxiety. Some won't. Preventing anxiety problems such as these isn't as simple as changing one thing about how you raise a puppy, so I wouldn't worry too much about any one aspect of your dog's life, but rather focus on building her confidence, getting lots of exercise (both mental and physical) and giving her plenty of good experiences with new people, places, and things so he develops happy and healthy.
My boyfriend and I allow our dogs to sleep in our bed but we still crate train :) Dogs are a part of the family, now I can't sleep without the snuggles haha But that's probably in the first 5 questions I ask an owner. Some dogs are not allowed on furniture at home and it's good to be consistent. Some dogs are allowed on furniture but only at guests that allow it's homes. It's always good to ask and make sure :)
Dogs should not sleep in your bed. This creates lots of issues especially if you are going to leave them with a sitter later on. Sitters are not required to sleep with your dog just because you do. I've encountered many pet parents who sleep with their dog and when they have an overnight stay, it is impossible to get them to sleep. I know its fun to sleep with your pet but think about what you are doing to them in the long run.
I love sleeping with my dogs. They're my family, my loved ones. They are very relaxing. Any dogs I sit are welcome to share my bed if the owner says they sleep in the bed at home.
