What's a good dog harness for car rides?

We're moving across country, and I'd really like to have harnesses for our two dogs to be belted in. I was looking for a cheap harness, but then I saw one that said "crash tested" and made the mistake of watching crash test videos, which made me want better harnesses. BUT, the crash test videos I've seen are at 20-30mph and we'll be going 65 most of the way. The good harnesses are $80+, which is way outside our price range. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Any advice?

I think you're referring to the Sleepypod Harnesses - which sells 2 models Utility (89.99) & Sport ($69.99). You may find for less online (amazon, ebay, etc). I agree -it would be great if there was reliable testing of these products in speeds closer to 65 MPH, but it seems currently this is the best available info.

Center for Pet Safety (non-profit) @ http://www.centerforpetsafety.org provides recommendations for: Crates (Dogs 75# and under), Harnesses (dogs 16 lbs – 90 lbs.) and Carriers (dogs and cats 15 lbs. and under.) Since you have 2 dogs, (both large if I recall), maybe crates are the best option for you? CPS recommends The Gunner Kennel G1 Intermediate with Strength Rated Anchor Straps - named Top Performer in 2015 Study.

I was in a severe car crash with my dogs a while back and one got really hurt so I invested in a seatbelt harness it locks in to the seatbelt and then on you dogs collar so they stay in one place and it will keep them from flying almost out the window so it keeps them strapped to one spot.

The name of this harness is called Kurgo.

I have tried a lot of harness since i travel with my dog all the time, the one that I currently have is a EZYDOG harness it was about $55 if i recall and it is the best i have used so far. Very easy to get your dog into and attaches to the Seat belt . a crate might also be a good option as well

here is the link http://store.ezydog.com/

Hope this helps.

I didn't follow that last response. What is dogs 75#? I have one 60 lb dog. Not sure if this would work for two. I jerry-rigged something and I make no claims to its safety but it's on the cheap. It keeps the dog from jumping into the front seats but allows him to move around in the back. It includes an inexpensive harness that's meant for a seat belt to loop through a strap on the back. Then I put together a short length of vinyl-coated wire rope with clips on each end (Home Depot or Lowes for parts). I attach one clip to the ring on the back of his harness and the other to a baby seat anchor behind the rear-seat headrest. Again, it's probably not that safe and I'm sure others out there who have better set-ups than mine.

Namasté,

If a dog is NOT in a cage an you do get into a vehicle accident, the insurance company will NOT pay!
