I see many profiles without the shield/check badge. Maybe background checks aren't required? You could call Rover and ask about that (I can provide some examples.).

I thought immigrants are supposed to receive an ITIN (individual taxpayer id number). It's the equivalent of an SSN for things like background & credit checks, filing a tax return for investment income, etc. However, it doesn't allow employment. If entry is made with a visa which allows work (like a spousal visa), or they marry a US citizen and petition for permanent residency, they would receive an EAD (employment authorization) and use that to apply for an SSN.

Maybe the background check isn't the barrier? If Rover boarding/sitting is considered employment, Rover may require the SSN as proof of eligibility to work.

Unless someone else knows for sure, call Rover and reply here with what you learn.

The shield badge is for sitters who paid for the background check performed by Checkr, a third-party company, Rover may do some type of perfunctory checking for all sitters based on SSN or is just requiring it as a matter of course.

I don't recall paying for mine, nor reading anything about it being deducted from first booking. Maybe I've forgotten.

Whoops! You are correct. I was confusing it with the premium protection package. However, that background check (for the badge) is still elective.

Whatever Rover does with your SSN will not give the sitter a badge.

I never paid for a background check. From what I understand, it depends on the area (or state?) you live in. I'm from WI, so no background check fees applied.

really, it would not open my profile until after the Background check?
