How do you handle it when a dog goes into heat in your care?

I don't accept dogs that are in heat, but for the second time now, I have had a dog go into heat while in my care. The first dog was almost a 2 week stay and this one is a long weekend. The dog that I am caring for now has started to spot and will be here another 3 days. She has been fine with my little, neutered guy. This weekend I have a Husky (owner says that he's neutered) and a Boxer (don't know if he's neutered) coming.

What precautions do you take when caring for dogs that in heat?

good luck if they aren't fixed. I just spent a weekend on a trip with a group of friends and their dogs. female was in heat with 2 unfixed males, and the males started fighting eachother without the female present. female may get moody with other females around. I'd put a diaper on and

I have had this happen once and I do not take unaltered dogs either but the client was not as honest as they should have been. I went and bought a cloth doggy diaper (Petsmart carries them and Wal mart does too sometimes) and used it. They are like kid panties and has a hole for the tail and you put a sanitary pad in them to catch the stuff. It is quiet easy to use and well worth it.

I have never had another but have the diaper if I need it. It is a good investment. Otherwise, there is not much else to do. It also keeps boy dogs from getting to her! It is difficult to tell whether they actually are spayed so you have to rely on the pet parent to be honest.

If a dog went into heat in my care, I inform my client, buy and keep receipts for disposable dog diapers, keep the diapers on the dog. Every time you let the dog out, you need to put a new diaper on. Some dogs may need a 'cone' e collar. Keep all un-neutered males away.

Similar to Angela's response, I've used "doggy diapers" that are able to address any accidents (both dogs in heat, and those that are not 100% potty trained). They sell them on Amazon, so I was able to get it shipped the next day. It's definitely a good investment/tool to add to your doggy supplies :)

Use diapers when out of their crated area. Use a crate, and take off diaper. They usually clean up well after themselves.

When in a bind, a pair of women's panties with a hole cute for the tail and a sanitary pad works well, just cut both ends of the pantie at the hip part and tie knots to make it tight enough on the dog. Keep all males away from her or at least never unsupervised.
