How do I get my dog to like car rides, again?

My dog use to love to take a car ride, he was very well behaved , usually slept. Now after a long road trip(last year) he gets very stressed out, jumps around. a danger to drive with. I have him harnessed in the back seat, on a short leash. It doesn't seam to matter if its a short trip or a little longer. If the car is not moving he would stay in it forever and sleep. But once the car moves, he's up and moving, he shows great signs of stress. Please help

Lisa, I have often found that dogs can tell so much by your voice. I would talk while utilizing some of the great other advice that's been given here. Think of it as a pep talk. I find talking to animals in various situations where nervousness is demonstrated often overcomes these difficulties.

Start by putting him in the car in his safety harness, then getting into the driver's seat with your hands on the wheel. DON'T start the car. If he's calm, give him treats. Then get out and let him out.

If he does get upset, try putting him in his harness and only going to the driver's door. If he's calm, give him a treat and let him get out. Keep backing up in the process until you find his threshold.

Once you know the point at which he starts to get anxious, practice at the point before for a couple of days.

Slowly move along the chain of steps, gving him treats at each stage when he's successful. If he digresses, go back one or 2 steps where he was calm.

Once you've got the car started and in gear, back up along the drive (or whatever the first move is that you make in the car). Give him treats and praise. Next, try driving up the street past 1-2 houses. Then go around the block.

The keys are to take slow progressive steps and to go backward when it gets overwhelming.

If you're patient, you'll get him back on track! All the best, Kelley

You should just stand by the car with the door open and then take high value treats to give him. Once he's comfortable throw the treats into the car and see how he reacts and after that have the car running and give him treats. Then give him treats when you move the car a little and try to put something in the car that he likes so that it'll keep his mind off of him being in the car.
