Does anyone have safe tips for keeping a home smelling fresh?

Our home always smells great! However, we have utilized the plug-ins and some people have shared that this could be hazardous if a dog would chew on it. I purchased a diffuser, but I haven't found the right oils maybe? I don't want people to smell "dog" when they arrive at our home. Suggestions?

I have found that good old-fashioned BAKING SODA works great on the carpet and pet bedding, which is where the majority of the smell comes from. Just sprinkle on about 30 minutes before vacuuming. Freshens the whole room. You can sprinkle some in the litter box as well!

I've just become great friends with my vacuum. I use 3 drops lavender in my diffuser and it works great! I have also used peppermint.

I mix Vinegar and water in a spray bottle and use a Steam Mop. Vinegar is great for removing odors and dirt. We brush our dog after he has been walked and I vacuum his pet beds. When he gets a bath, we wash all of his bedding, also.

“Purification” essential oil by Young Living is the only thing that has permanently removed odors in my home. Not our favorite scent, but after several days of diffusing, SUCCESS! A clean house, clean dog, clean bedding are also essential.

To clean my floors and get rid of the dog smell I use Nature's miracle it gets rid of any urine stains or scents as well as dirt and they make it in different scents like lavender! :) then to make the house smell good I use my plug in wax melter as well as an essential oil diffuser with a flowery scent.

I like to use the Bath and Body Works Wallflower plug ins. They help cover up the "kennel" smell a bit when you walk in the door.

Thanks Kelly!

Agree, Nature's Miracle is amazing stuff. All natural and works fast.

Hello, I have two dogs and you would never know it. I think it is very important to bath you dogs regularly with a high quality shampoo. I wash the bedding the same day I give my pets a bath. I also like opening the windows to air out the house. If your dogs are clean your house will smell clean.. I know it is a pain to give a dog a bath especially if you have a big dog but your home will not smell like dog. Yankee candles are great also and will give your home a nice smell.

Your home will not smell like dog if your dog doesn't smell like one. I clean my dogs paws and underbelly everytime he goes for a walk. He is allowed on furniture and most people are surprised when they rub him. My dog sheds so I have to sweep and mop often.

We use a wax melts in a Scentsy warmer during the day and diffuse essential oils at night. For cleaning floors, I make up a mixture of half vinegar, half hydrogen peroxide, and add in essential oils. Lemon and sweet orange are great antibacterial / antiviral. Cinnamon helps prevent mold. I am constantly cleaning floors and keep my Swifter Wet Jet on stand by. I've cut a hole in the top of the bottle to refill it with my solution.

We bought a carpet cleaner and use it pretty often after vacuuming. We also have candles in hard to reach places, diffusers, and wax warmers.

Yes! We did as well - we have a central vac but I'm going to have to schedule a maintenance. The hair can be incredible! Do you have a favorite kind of candle you buy? Every now and then, I find nice soy candles. You?

I love vinegar and hot water plus it destroys odors and is non toxic.

Denise, vinegar on counters...floors? I bet you have great floors! Sadly, our floors are Brazilian cherry wood --I polish, polish, polish! But let me know for sure how to use the vinegar - I like it!

I love vinegar and water too. Kills odors effectively. Lisa B., I use the white distilled vinegar in a dilution of about 1/4 to 1/3 water on carpets and floors. Can also be added to a load of laundry.

I don't know about floors, but vinegar and water are great for cleaning glass, especially your car windows. I also use Nature's Miracle to clean up dog urine.

Vacuum like crazy, dust and, if weather permits, leave some windows open for fresh air. Put drapes in the dryer on fluff to remove dog hair.

I have red oak bamboo floor, and it works really well. Gets the smell out and leaves them shinny

I learned this from my Mom: before a house party she would put a big pot of water simmering with some apples and a stick of cinnamon. Be sure to check and keep adding water !

I am a clean freak and I'm obsessed with my house smelling good. I love, love, love my candle warmers I bought at Yankee Candle. It's the ones you plug in and put a melting wax candle on top (Easy Melt Cups.) Everyone that comes in my house always tells me how clean my house smells and I have 2 little dogs and guest dogs. I am about to purchase another one to put in the upstairs area, that's how much I love them.

I do love Yankee candles and will buy them for more than special occasions.

I take baking soda and put in a glass jar and mix it with essential oils to use as a carpet freshner, leave it on the carpet for 30-40 minutes and vacumme it up and voila, fresh smelling. I also have distilled water in a glass bottle mixed with a little baking soda and vinegar and essential oils that I use as my Febreeze. Also helps to leave a small glass jar of the carpet mixture mentioned above open in places your fury baby can't get to. Fresh, Fresh, Fresh.

I use diluted Lavender and mint essential oils in a spray bottle...on the dogs and carpet curtains and upholstery. I don't let them go without a bath and the same with their blankets. Lavender oil is known to prevent mosquito, fleas and ticks too!

I use a cold vaporizer (similar to a scent diffuser but not heated) and add a small amount of essential oil to the water to keep everything smelling fresh. Works great even in my small apartment!
