Whether or not you believe in psychic powers, there’s no shortage of psychics who are willing and able to communicate via senses outside the “normal” realm. And not just for humans, either.
Turning to pet psychics (also known as animal communicators) to communicate with dogs long gone or simply understand what’s going on in our furry friend’s heads is becoming more and more common with services popping up all over the country—but is it legitimate?
No matter how many episodes of Sonya Fitzpatrick we might watch (or how many celebrities we see her work with—hello, Ellen DeGeneres!), we’ll probably never really know. But for many, dog psychics provide a source of much-needed comfort.
What’s a psychic, anyway?
A psychic— for humans or pets or anything, really—claims to use something called extrasensory perception (ESP for short) to seek out information undetectable by the normal five senses. The “sixth sense” covers a wide range of alleged abilities, including clairvoyance, channeling, premonition, telekinesis, and telepathy—all of which embody a certain type of energy called “electromagnetic energy” that researchers have yet to back up with any sort of scientific findings as it relates to ESP.
But lack of scientific findings doesn’t keep pet psychics from practicing—or people from truly believing. They use the energy to communicate with animals—dead or alive—for any number of purposes, using their minds to learn things we wouldn’t otherwise know. And it’s been around for ages, dating all the way back to ancient times.
Why do people go to pet psychics?
Sometimes, people simply want to know what their pets are thinking (been there!), which is one of the reasons people seek out pet psychics. But often, it’s for something more serious: To find a missing pet, change destructive behavior in a pet, decide whether a sick or injured pet should be euthanized, or connect with a pet who has passed.
What should I expect?
First, the pet psychic will chat with the pet parent, either via phone or in person. They’ll ask what you’re there for, what you’re hoping to learn, etc., and then using photographs or even just a description of your pet to relay the message to them telepathically.
Others use tarot cards designed specifically for pet readings. Every pet psychic will work a little bit differently, but in general, the experience follows a series of steps where the psychic calms and relaxes her mind and body, then claims to connect with the animal’s energy, calls the animal’s name telepathically, and asks the question.
From there, they wait for the animal to respond, sometimes in words, other times in images, and then relay the message to its owner.
What’s the difference between a psychic and a whisperer?
A psychic claims to draw from the sixth sense, while a whisperer relies on body language and a deep understanding of animal psychology to communicate.
If you’ve followed every step of “The Dog Whisperer” Cesar Millan’s career, you might know that his work, which focuses on helping dogs with behavioral issues, traces all the way back to his childhood, which is common for people in psychic or whisperer type roles.
In essence, an animal whisperer is a person with a deep, intimate understanding of the way animals behave in a variety of situations, and they’re skilled in interpreting those behaviors.
