This viral video clip might just break your heart. A snippet from a documentary called Dogs: Their Secret Lives is making the internet rounds, showing what dogs do when we leave them home alone. The hidden camera footage upsets the dogs’ owners, but don’t worry— there is a happy ending! These videos are a reminder that separation anxiety can be a real issue for dogs, and that a loving pet sitter or dog walker makes a huge difference in their lives.
Wireless cameras have become so popular, they’re more affordable than ever: you’ve got plenty of great options for taking a peek at your own pet while you’re away.

As-is, the short clip leaves out how these suffering animals get help. Animal behavior scientist Dr. Emily Blackwell comes to the rescue, and coaches the families on relaxation techniques for dogs. The dog Bruno is introduced to stuffed Kong toys, given a new mat associated with the treat, and a trigger word will be introduced that means “relaxation time!”

We next check in with Bruno after a few weeks of practice with the relaxation technique. Bruno’s mom is able to leave Bruno happily on his mat enjoying his Kong while she moves anywhere around the house, even opening and closing doors. Bruno has learned that this mat is his safe space. The mat training has helped Bruno immensely with being left home alone.

This documentary was so incredibly popular that Channel 4 went on to make a series about other dog behaviors and problems, from weight loss to aggression. You can see the full first show right here, and the series here.
